Community Development

Social relations, employment and revenue

Bahia Specialty Cellulose has ongoing relationships with its various stakeholders, seeking to identify opportunities, risks and necessities pertaining to its activities. In this way it is better able to understand regional realities and can plan its activities in such a way as to contribute more effectively to economic, social and environmental development within its area of influence.

We provide 650 jobs directly in forestry, industrial and administrative operations. At the industrial facility an additional 600 jobs are outsourced. At certain times during the year when there is planting and harvesting of eucalyptus trees, the number of outsourced workers can go as high as 5,000.

Community Planting Program

Created to allow for the participation of local farmers in the eucalyptus chain of production, the Community Planting Program seeks to have 15,000 hectares under contract by 2010 - the equivalent of 15% of the demand for wood to supply our mill. Through this partnership, the company shares its forestry technology and helps farmers diversify their activities and increase their sources of income, planting eucalyptus on available areas of their properties. Part of the wood is assigned to the producers, who can sell it or use it for other purposes, depending on their needs.

Piassava Project

Created for the purpose of providing alternative sources of income for 250 families in the region, Project Piassava is a partnership of Bahia Specialty Cellulose with Sebrae (Brazilian Support Service for Micro and Small Enterprises) and other institutions. Through this project, the company disseminates sustainable management concepts and practices, guaranteeing the preservation of species and the continuing extraction of fiber on its properties.

Junior Achievement

Since 2005, Bahia Specialty Cellulose has been sponsoring the Junior Achievement program in Bahia. This is a program created to stimulate the entrepreneurial spirit and personal development of youthful students, offering them a general vision of business and the free trade system through practical approaches. Nearly 20 volunteers from Bahia Specialty Cellulose take part in the project as instructors or monitors. The project benefits 150 students in Alagoinhas, one of the municipalities where the company is engaged in its forestry activities.

Beekeeping Project

Through a technical cooperation agreement with the government of the State of Bahia and Coopevales (Agricultural Cooperative of the Coast of Sauípe), the company has made available bee raising areas located in its fiber plantations, legal reserves and permanent preservation areas for the installation of beehives. Hundreds of families have already benefited from this project, whose goal is to bring in nearly 800 families by 2010.
